What is an in-text or parenthetical citation?

Answer

Every time you quote or paraphrase someone else’s work in your paper, you must include who wrote the work, what it is called, and where we can find a copy, by citing the source using APA, Chicago, MLA or other citation styles.  See Citation Help for additional information.

You give this information in two places:

  • In the paragraph where you are quoting or paraphrasing - this is called an in-text or parenthetical citation because you will put brief information about the work in the text of your paper.
  • In the References/Works Cited page at the end of your paper.
