How do I format my paper in MLA style?

Answer

Here are the basic guidelines for formatting a paper in MLA style:

  • Include your name, your instructor's name, the course, and the date in the upper left-hand corner of the first page
  • Center the title without italics, quotation marks, or underline
  • Double-space the text
  • Use a font which can be read easily
  • Include a cover page
  • Page numbers in the header
  • 1” Margins
  • Your instructor’s guidelines always supersede any of these guidelines

For more information, see the Purdue OWL’s example paper and guidelines.

If you need further help with paper formatting, contact a Librarian or the Writing Center.
