How do I format my paper in Chicago Style?

Answer

Here are the basic guidelines for Chicago Style:

  • Include your name, your instructor's name, the course, and the date in the upper left-hand corner of the first page
  • Double-space the text
  • 12 point font, Times New Roman is recommended
  • Page numbers in the header of the first page (not title page, first page of paper)
  • 1” Margins
  • Title of paper appears on the first page above the first paragraph or on the Title Page (consult your professor about whether you need a title page)
  • Bibliography starts on a separate page with sources in alphabetical order
  • Your instructor’s guidelines always supersede any of these guidelines

For more information see the Purdue OWL’s example paper and guidelines or the Marist History Department Writing Guide.

If you need further help with paper formatting, contact a Librarian or the Writing Center.
