Does the library have genealogy resources?
Answer
The library does not subscribe to genealogy sources, but there are a number of freely available genealogy resources that you can make use of to do genealogy research.
Historical census data provides a lot of information. You can access the historical decennial censuses (done every 10 years) 1790-present to find broad information about the population of the United States.
Family Search: create a free account to search family trees and census records to find your ancestor.
Olive Tree Genealogy provides a list of free resources available on the internet.
You can also access historical immigration records from a number of resources:
- Passenger Search from Ellis Island
- Passenger Lists from the National Archives and Records Administration
- Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild
For things like Ancestry.com, check to see if your local library provides access to library card holders. If you are a current Marist student you can apply for a library card at Poughkeepsie’s Adriance Memorial Library and gain access to Ancestry.com.
If you need further help, contact a librarian.
