How do I cite book/eBook chapters in CSE?

Answer

This question has been updated to the 9th edition of CSE Style. If you are using 8th edition, see this Library Handout, Quick Guide, or contact a librarian.

CSE recommends citing book chapters as follows:

For edited books (chapters written by different authors):

Chapter Author Last Name Author First Initial(s).*  Book Year. Chapter title. In: Editor Last Name First      Initial(s), editor(s).* Book title. Edition (if applicable). Publisher. p. Chapter page numbers.

Barre N. 2019. Impressions of a French Calvinist. In: Green JN, Langland V, Moritz Schwarcz L, editors. The      Brazil reader. 2nd ed., revised and updated. Duke University Press. p. 25-27.

Same Author(s) for entire book:

Book Author Last Name First Initial(s).* Book Year. Book title. Publisher. Chapter title (including chapter      number); p. Chapter page numbers.

Van Evera S. 1997. Guide to methods for students of political science. Cornell University Press.      Hypotheses, laws, and theories: a user's guide, chapter 1. p. 7-14.

eBooks

CSE does not have an example for eBook chapters, so librarians have created the following suggested citation for eBook Chapters based upon the CSE examples for eBooks and book chapters.

For edited eBooks (chapters written by different authors):

Chapter Author Last Name First Initial(s).*  Book Year. Chapter title. In: Editor Last Name First Initial(s),      editor.* Book title. Edition (if applicable).  Publisher. p. Chapter page numbers. URL/DOI

Despres J, Wells JV. 2020. Maine's ornithological history. In: Vickery PD, Vickery BS, Weidensaul S, Duncan      CD, Sheehan WJ, Wells JV, editors. Birds of Maine. Princeton University Press. p. 31-      41. https://doi.org/10.2307/j.ctv11699m4

Same Author(s) for entire eBook:

Book Author Last Name Book Author First Initial(s).* Book Year. Book title. Publisher. Chapter title (including      chapter number); p. Chapter page numbers. URL/DOI

Zippel KS. 2017. Women in global science: advancing academic careers through international collaboration.      Stanford University Press. 4 Glass fences: gendered organization of global academia; p. 74-98.      https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/marist-ebooks/detail.action?docID=4771433

*Include additional authors and editors if listed, separate each with a comma.
