How do I cite magazines in CSE?

Answer

This question reflects guidance provided in both the 8th and 9th editions of CSE Style. Biology students, please use 8th edition CSE examples.

CSE does not offer a citation example for magazine articles, so librarians have created a suggested citation based upon the CSE rules for citing newspaper articles.

8th Edition

Author last name Author first initial(s). Year Mon Day. Article title. Title of Magazine. [accessed Year Mon Day]. URL.

If there isn’t a named author:

Article title. Year Mon Day. Title of Magazine. [accessed Year Mon Day]. URL.

Check with your professor about whether you need to include an access date or not.

9th Edition

Author last name Author first initial(s). Year Mon Day. Article title. Title of Magazine.* URL.

Adler J, Doherty S. 1985 Sep 9. Kids: the deadliest game?      Newsweek. https://archive.org/details/kids_the_deadliest_game-newsweek-1985-09-09

For articles without an author:

Article title. Year Mon Day. Title of Magazine. URL.

Why are The Economist's writers anonymous? 2017 Mar 27. The Economist.      https://medium.economist.com/why-are-the-economists-writers-anonymous-8f573745631d

*Magazine titles are not abbreviated.
