How do I cite something that is cited in my source in APA Style? (indirect/secondary sources)

Answer

APA recommends the following for citing a source mentioned in the text of the source you have:

At the start of the sentence:

Author Last Name(s) (of source mentioned in text of your source) wrote…(as cited in your source’s Author's Last Name(s), date of your source, page number of your source)

Smith wrote….(as cited in Jones et al., 2009, p. 5).

Or

At the end of the sentence:

(Author Last Name(s) (of source mentioned in text of your source), Original Source Date, as cited in your source’s Author's Last Name(s), date of your source, page number of your source).

(Smith, 2002, as cited in Jones et al., 2009, p.5).

For your references section, you will just cite your source and not the source cited within it since you did not have that source.
