How do I cite a TikTok video in Chicago?
Answer
This question reflects guidance provided in both the 17th and 18th editions of Chicago Style as no changes were made in the new edition.
Chicago recommends citing social media, including TikTok, narratively in text using just the name, username and date mentioned in parentheses.
A formal citation in a footnote can be added when needed and on rare occasions, an entry in the bibliography may be included.
Footnote:
1. Firstname Lastname (@username), “Text of post up to 160 characters,” Video, Month day, year, URL.
1. Marist Library (@marist.library), “We are here and ready to help!,” Video, January 18, 2024, https://www.tiktok.com/@marist.library/video/7325554278280465694.
2. Marist Library, “We are here.”
