How do I cite a TikTok video in Chicago?

Answer

Chicago recommends citing social media, including TikTok, narratively in text using just the name, username and date mentioned in parentheses.

A formal citation in a footnote can be added when needed and on rare occasions, an entry in the bibliography may be included.

Footnote:

1. Firstname Lastname (@username), “Text of post up to 160 characters,” Video, Month day, year, URL.

1. Marist Library (@marist.library), “We are here and ready to help!,” Video, January 18, 2024, https://www.tiktok.com/@marist.library/video/7325554278280465694.

 2. Marist Library, “We are here.”

Bibliography:

Last Name, First Name. “Text of post up to 160 characters.” TikTok, Month day, year. URL.

Marist Library. “We are here and ready to help!.” TikTok, January 18, 2024. https://www.tiktok.com/@marist.library/video/7325554278280465694
