How do I cite the Bible in Chicago Style?

Answer

Footnote:

Footnotes referring to the Bible should include book, chapter, and verse. However, since books and numberings are not identical in different versions, it is essential to identify which version is being cited. If you are citing the same version of the Bible more than once, you do not need to repear the version name in subsequent footnotes.

Traditional abbreviations:

  1. 2 Kings 11:8 (New Revised Standard Version).
  2. 1 Cor. 6:1-10 (New Revised Standard Version).

Bibliography:

References to the Jewish or Christian scriptures usually appear only in footnotes rather than in bibliographies.
