How do I cite an interview in APA?
Answer
APA divides interviews into two primary types:
- published interviews (in print or recorded) from a publicly available source.
- personal interviews (interviews or correspondence) conducted by you, the writer, and are not publicly available.
Published Interviews:
- Cite the source according to APA rules for that source type, ex. magazine, video, etc.,
- See other FAQs and citation guidance on how to cite various formats.
- The interviewee’s name may not be included in the formal in-text citation, but can be referenced in the narrative.
- The author will be the interviewer.
Interview in a magazine:
Marks, O. (2021, August 9). Inside the beautiful world of Sally Rooney. British Vogue. https://www.vogue.co.uk/arts-and-lifestyle/article/sally-rooney-interview
(Marks, 2021)
Personal Interviews:
- Are conducted by you, the writer via email, Zoom, phone, or in person.
- Are cited in text only, because they can not be retrieved by the reader or others.
Narrative:
Interviewee First Initial. Interviewee’s Last Name (Date of Interview)…..
J. Doe first encountered a red fox when visiting a zoo as a child (personal communication, December 13, 2022).
Parenthetical:
(Interviewee First Initial. Interviewee Last Name, Date of Interview).
(J. Doe, personal communication, December 13, 2022).
