How do I cite ChatGPT & Other AI Tools in AMA Style?

Answer

AMA states that AI tools should not be treated as an author of content and content produced by them will not be cited in references. Instead acknowledge in-text when first mentioning the use of AI to create or edit content.

The mention of its use can be very generic, followed by AI tool brand name, version/extension #, manufacturer/owner, date used in parentheses.

Participants’ responses were scored using a chatbot session (ChatGPT, model GPT-4, OpenAI, May 17, 2024).

You can also include the date in the narrative sentence rather than in parentheses.

On May 17, 2024, a chatbot calculated the average grip force of all participants (ChatGPT, model GPT-4, OpenAI).

For further information, consult Sections 5.1.12 and 5.2.1.1 of the AMA manual available from the library.
