How do I format authors in ACS Style?
Answer
In ACS Style,
- Authors are listed first by last name followed by first initial(s). Do not include degrees or titles
- List up to 10 authors
- For 11, place a semicolon after the 10th author followed by “et al.”
- Separate the last name from the initial with a comma
- Place a period after each initial
- If someone lists Jr. or Sr. as part of their name, place it after the initials with a comma before it
- Separate each author with a semicolon
- Do not use the word “and” or “&” between the last and second to last author
Denise Pan, Skylar Budd, Margaret Bruehl, and Jefferson D. Knight → Pan, D.; Budd, S.; Bruehl, M.; Knight, J.D.
If you have an author with a hyphenated last name, retain the hyphenation and capitalize both.
Ex: Smith-Jones
If the author has a hyphenated first name, follow each initial with a period with a hyphen between them.
Ex: Ellie-Rose → E.-R.
