Where do I place in-text citations in ACS Style?
Answer
Marist faculty prefer that in-text citations appear as superscript numbers in text (remember these are not footnotes, see “How do I create in-text citations for ACS (American Chemical Society) Style?” for instructions on how to do this).
If the entire sentence is derived from a source, the superscript number should appear at the end of the sentence outside the punctuation.
Ex: Chemistry is the best subject to study.1
If the citation only applies to one portion of the sentence, place it as close to the mention as possible.
Ex: Students studying chemistry1 work hard.
You can mention author(s) name(s) in-text, in which case the in-text citation should appear next to their name(s).
One author: Smith1 found….
Two authors: Smith and Jones1 studied…
Three or more authors: Smith et al.1 showed…
If citing data or other information within a table, place the superscript number, maintaining the numerical order from the rest of the paper, next to the data/information.
