How do I cite email and other forms of personal communication in APA Style?
Answer
In APA style, personal communications, including emails and social media messages, are not included in the reference list. They’re only included as in-text citations.
APA recommends citing personal communications in-text as follows:
(Sender first initial(s). Sender last name, personal communication, date).
“There has been a rise in groundhog sightings on campus” (J. Fox, personal communication, August 26, 2024).
OR
Jimmy Fox reported that “there has been a rise in groundhog sightings on campus” (personal communication, August 26, 2024).
