How do I cite a source in-text that doesn’t have page numbers in Chicago Style?

Answer

This question has been updated to the 18th edition of Chicago Style.
If you are using 17th edition, see this
Library Handout, Purdue OWL, or contact a librarian.

Sources such as newspapers,* magazines, and webpages that do not have page numbers would not have page numbers in the footnotes.

Example:

  1. Author First Name Author Last Name, “Article Title,” Source Title, Date.

1.  Victoria Brenan, “Urban Red Foxes Show Similarities to Domesticated Dogs,” Herald, 2020.

*If a newspaper does have page numbers, do not include them in footnotes.

If you have a Journal Article that has an article number, rather than page numbers, please refer to How do I cite a journal article that only has an article number in Chicago Style?
