How do I cite a table that I created for my paper in MLA Style?

Answer

This table will not require a Works Cited or in-text citation, instead place source information underneath the table.

Each table should have:

  • A label with the table’s corresponding number above your table. The label should be the word ‘Table’
  • A caption underneath the label above your table. This will either be the table’s title or, if one is not provided, a brief description of the table and its contents
  • The source information below your table. The source information is the citation you’d typically put in your works cited page.
    • Cite the source you got the information in the table from (no matter if you are adapting an existing table or putting data in a new table)
  • Any needed notes below your table. Notes are any additional information about the table you might want to use. For example, if there was certain data missing or not included, you might include that in a note.

Table Example

In-text reference: In 2024, statistics show that 17.6 million more people in the United States owned dogs than cats, and there were 15.9 million more dogs in the United States than cats. This corresponds to the higher average spending on veterinary costs for households owning dogs than those owning cats (see table 1).
