How do I format in-text citations for AMA?

Answer

In-text citations for AMA style are created by putting superscript numbers in text.  These are not footnotes!  Type in the number, highlight it, and then use the superscript function in Microsoft Word/Word for Mac or select Format, then Text, then Superscript in Google Docs.

The source used first in text, becomes number one in the reference list.  You may wish to wait to number your sources until your paper is done as you’ll have to renumber the superscript numbers and your reference list if you change the order in text.

For sources with 1-2 authors include both authors’ last names: Smith or Smith and Jones.

For sources with 3 or more authors include just the first author’s last name followed by et al.: Smith et al.

For more information on in-text citations, refer to the AMA tab of the Citation Help page.
