How do I cite information from a table or graph in MLA Style?

Answer

In MLA style, if you are referring to an image, including tables or graphs, and not placing it within your paper, your citation will be for the source the image came from.

For example, below is a citation for a table from a website.

“U.S. Pet Ownership Statistics.” American Veterinary Medical Association, 2024, avma.org/resources-tools/reports-statistics/us-pet-ownership-statistics

In-text citation: The table shows a slightly higher percentage of US households owning dogs than cats in 2024 (U.S. Pet Ownership).

If you are citing an image that is not a chart or graph, refer to the FAQ “How do I cite an image in MLA Style?”
